Ottawa Softball ONSPL THURSDAY – Post Game 4, SBW vs Poole Creek Pirates

The house Group Message (GM) rang all afternoon, would we play or would it be another rain out? Krystle typed back 98% chance we don’t play!. “The Gods were with us and the clouds parted to allow sunshine to light up the fields” -Isabelle. Ottawa softball would play!

After going 0-2 to start the season Suds, Buds & Windmills was looking to come in hot and that they did. Team white and blue (although the opposing team had similar taste and equally sexy – not at all confusing) put up an easy 7 runs in the first. Big mention to Krystle’s in-park home-run she turned into a triple! In the bottom frame, Jeff would lay out for a grounder at 2B and from the ground a little shovel throw to Rich to make the out. it’s almost like he bought pants and suddenly was a contender. With a small learning mistake from the Pirates at home, Buds get out of the inning with 2 runs against. (7-2).

Second inning – In Typical SBW fashion after the hot, hot start the bats go cold with a 3 up, 3 down.  In the bottom of 2 new comer Ryan Dan would prove to be just as effective at 3B as he was as pitcher in this past weekend’s Team Dylan vs Team Krystle Summer Classic picking up 2 outs to help close out the inning with the Buds giving up another 2. (7-4).

Top of 3, welcome back Adria for her first game of the year starting the Buds off to another big inning . Big triple from Rich and SBW fires back for 5 runs. Bottom of three the Pirates push back. Isabelle and Dylan were having a staring contest in the outfield which resulted in an infield home run – later when it didn’t count Dylan dug deep and whispered “something” softly, we honestly can’t tell you CAUSE NO ONE HEARD it. With a few more miscues like Captain Eric throwing the ball away at 1B (ended up being 3 times over the game!) The Pirates push back for 4 runs (12 -8).

Top of 4, We would see SBW’s first out of park home run from J.Cobb (Solo of course, but into the other diamond!) with the Buds firing on all cylinders putting in another 7 runs.  Bottom of 4 Buds get back to some better D with the help of Anne in control, catching an amazing pop fly on the run in left field. (19 -10).

Top 5 SBW keep the bats hot, turning over the batting line up with another 4 runs and leaving 3 more on base! Back to the Bottom Buds keep the D on lock keeping the Poole Creek Pirates off the board. Notable highlight with a great tag play at 3B from Dylan (assist to J. Cobb in the field). The Suds, Buds & Windmills managed to get their first win of the 2021 season with a 23 – 10 mercy win!

Spirits were high throughout the game, as well as in the extra inning that the opposing team agreed to play, and in the mini beer party afterwards. It goes without saying both teams were on fire, on and off the field.  Isabelle then pumped our opponents full of beer and hopefully they will support us when the Lady Buds go to Hamilton and maybe even their ladies will join our cause. As usual, the men didn’t look to their base coaches. Have you seen our girls.. like Dammmn, even your straight writers of this very article wouldn’t say no to them Lady Buds! Most of the team would start the stretch together and it should be noted the last time Isabelle, Anne and Krystle played together (Eric was there too, coo coo) we won division A at the RA , just sayin’.

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 9, SBW vs MNY

Ottawa ball hockey goes from the “A” to “C” for our next game. MNY have had a tough year and are looking for win #1 of the season; they were taking on SB&W who sit 4th in the division. SB&W could move into 3rd with a win, Onto the ball hockey action now. Closer than expected? We started this game off with a few faces in different places as Dylan “Cundellingus” Cundell suited up in nets for MNY. The first half only had one goal late as Jake Miron would score between Cundell’s five hole to give SB&W the 1-0 lead at half with shots an outrageous 22-6 for SBW.

Cundell would continue his stellar goalie play keeping MNY in the game as they have not won all year with several outstanding saves including a between the legs attempt from SB&W’s A-A-ron Gregoire. Finally, the red light goes on for MNY in the 2nd half as Ritcho “Chewie” Chu would scoop his own rebound and backhand it past a shell-shocked Riel Ouimet to tie this game at 1.

SB&W continued their relentless pressure bringing wave after wave of bodies and shots at Cundell, even having Cundell making an absolute unreal sprawling save with the glove hand off a shot from Aaron Gregoire. But as the pressure mounted midway through the 2nd half and you could see Cundell getting tired (He had played earlier in the day). He gives the ball away for a catastrophic gaffe right to Captain Eric Delisle, who deposited the ball into the empty cage giving SB&W the 2-1 lead.

Gregoire would finally beat Cundell from the half wall going bottom corner. Kelly Hall would finish up the trio of goals for SB&W in the half as she made a gorgeous tip out of mid air, through Cundell’s five hole and proceeded to dance in his crease (I think there was some side betting going on there haha). Even with the scorekeeper giving Cundell his player stick, to try and spark a stale MNY offensive attack, it was not enough to overcome the persistent SB&W players who threw everything at him including the kitchen sink. Riel would glove one down in the dying seconds to end the game. This game would finish 4-1 for SB&W with shots an unreal 51-16 for SB&W likely the only time in SB&W history that we’ve out shot our opponent with Riel in net!

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 3, SBW vs Huskies

Our next game saw SB&W taking on HSK in this always intense match-up between these two rivals. It would take nearly seven minutes for our first marker, and it came from Alastair Webb as he beat the tender with a wrister from the point. Kelly, from SB&W, would even things up as she buried a rebound in front, 1-1. Andrew Anderson would give HSK back the lead as he squeaked one in, on a shot from the point, 2-1. Ryan Daigle would extend the lead as he wristed one home from the slot, 3-1. Anderson was at it again as he intercepted a pass, and wired it top cheese, 4-1.

Krystle, from SB&W, would score with a floater, just fifteen seconds into the half, 4-2. Anderson would get that one back as he grabbed the loose ball and went in all alone and wristed it home (5-2). Bells would get his team to within 2, as he cut to the middle and wristed it short side, 5-3. With time winding down, and the goalie pulled, Anderson would end all hope of a comeback as he buried his fourth goal of the game giving HSK the 6-3 victory. Although HSK were dethroned as top spot in the C by the double win week from Electric Mayhem, making next weeks match-up for first place.

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 7, SBW vs Electric Mayhem

SB&W Ball Hockey Ottawa

Our next game saw the Buds taking on Electric Mayem. It was hard fought game with both teams playing aggressive defence in their own ends. However, for SB&W, the story of the game stellar performance from the masked man in goal. The game got off to a quick start. Five minutes in Chelsea Harbert would get a pass in the slot and bury it past Eric Delisle, who was making another start in net.

Later in the game, Krystle took a high sticking penalty that tied up her bet with Alex lol. Unfortunately, while on the penalty kill a costly rebound resulted in pass that gave Andrew Nowaczek an opportunity that he buried with a back-hand show low. This put Electric Mayhem up 2-0. This remained the score going into half-time. At this point, SB&W was more than doubling up on shots, leading 26-12 on the shot count.

The second half got off to a quick start just like the first. Six minutes in Paul Guilbeault would wrist one, to the low far side, and put Electric Mayhem up 3-0. SB&W answered back quickly a minute later. Jeremy Nichols (Scott actually played and got this goal but this is HTBHL so some mistakes are expected) got SB&W on the board when he buried a passing play, making the score 3-1. Jake Miron would get the next one as he buried one low, from the half-court, making it 3-2. Unfortunately, less than a minute later, Cody Trenholme would bury a wrist shot from half-court.

Well their was not much more to write about for the rest of the game. The quick start to the second half quieted down. There was not much more action as Electric Mayhem went on to take this one 4-2.

Check in next week for more SB&W Ball Hockey Action!

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 6, SBW vs No Regretzkies

Our next game in Ottawa saw SB&W’s Ballhockey Team Dylan, playing their second game, taking on NR in a game that seemed deja vu-ish, as one man really made the difference. NR would open the scoring when Colin Kargus would get a pass from the tender. He would snap it home, while in front. Kargus was at it again as he sent a backhander. Up top, while in close and on the power play, 2-0.

Ryan Asstastic would extend the lead while burying one in front, 3-0. C. Kargus would complete his Hat Trick as he beat the keeper with a snapper. The shot was from his own side of half, 4-0.NR were in the driver’s seat to begin this game, but things can change quickly in this league. After about ten minutes, Dylan Cundell would finally get SB&W on the board by burying his own rebound in front, 4-1. Kelly Hall would bury a rebound in front making it 4-2. Cundell would get SB&W to within 1 as he bury it up top on a pass out front, 4-3.

Jonathan Levy would surprise everyone as he actually hit the net, with a blast from the face-off dot, and evened things up, 4-4. Cundell would complete his second Hat Trick on the day as he stole the ball behind the net and beat the keeper with a wraparound, giving SB&W their first lead of the game, 5-4.

With time winding down, and on the man advantage, Cundell would bury a rebound in front making it 6-4 as we were headed into the break. NR held the edge in shots, 24-18, but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Heather Ouimet would get one early as the defencemen slowed down the ball enough for her to steal it and have her wrister squeak in, 7-4. C. Kargus was basically Dylan. He was on fire as he buried his fourth goal of the game.  A certain someone would give him the ball cleanly, tape-to-tape, and he would bury it low corner, 7-5.

Hall would get her second of the game as she buried it up top, on a cross floor pass, 8-5. With time winding down, and while on the penalty kill, Cundell would bury number five as he wristed it home from the face-off dot. That’s all she wrote as SB&W go 2 for 2 and climb atop of the C standings with a 9-5 victory.

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 5, SBW vs Vandelay Industries

Ottawa Ball Hockey team SB&W’s and one day league, was looking a little different this week.  Team Dylan was formed while Team Cuba was on vacation. No one enjoyed that a double header was booked but it was and here we are. Playing in game 1 of 2, taking on FO, who have been on a “hot streak lately”. This wouldn’t be a HTBHL write up without talking non stop about Dylan, now would it? This game was really one player made the difference. Dylan Cundell would open the scoring as he one-timed home a giveaway, by the goalie. Cundell would get the second one as he slipped it under the goalie while streaking in, 2-0. Cundell would complete the natural Hat Trick as he ripped it top corner, from his own end, 3-0. I liked it better when we came up with different nick names for Dylan but I guess writing Cundell on repeat works too. OG  Kelly Hall would extend the lead further as she buried a wrister on the far side, 4-0.

Second Half Riel or Dylan?

As time was winding down in the half, Eric Marleau would bury a wrister, far side making it 4-1 as we were headed into the break. FO were trailing in the score, but dominating in shots, 22-10. Meh, everyone knows Suds, Buds & Windmills has Riel, hands down the best goalie in the league. Why aren’t more post games just written about Riel? Good ol Cundell would open the scoring in the second as he buried a short side wrister, 5-1. SB&W would get into penalty trouble, wasn’t Krystle cause she’s in Cuba. FO would capitalize on Claudia being short, I think that’s what happen n. e ways. Marleau would bury a rebound off the wall through the five-hole, 5-2. Marleau would complete his Hat Trick as he buried a wrister in close, 5-3. With time winding down, Cundell would get a breakaway and bury it making the final in this one 6-3 for SB&W. You would think that’s a decent score but let’s just wait and see how it turns out.

Team Cuba spent the day on the ocean, Captain Eric hung out with the latest Baby Bud Emersyn, Back in Ottawa soon to play some Ball Hockey.

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 2, SBW vs Maybe Next Year

Our next game saw SB&W taking on the new comers MNY. MNY would open the scoring as Dylan Cundell would get the first goal in Franchise history by beating the keeper with a wrister in the slot. SB&W would get that one back as Jake Miron put the ball between the D’s legs and wristed it, up top, 1-1. Alex Thomson would wrist one five-hole to put SB&W up 2-1. “You got a point!” Exclaimed Krystle in possible disbelief. Cundell would even it up as his wrister beat the keeper top corner, 2-2. Jeremy Nichols would get that back as he beat the keeper with a wrister. Miron would follow it up burying the loose ball on a scramble in front. That’s how it looked at break as MNY led in the shot department, 11-10 (Riel was standing his ground with some wicked glove saves); but SB&W lead in the score, 4-2. Nichols would get his second of the game by having his shot go off the back wall, off the goalies foot and in, 5-2 on a lucky bounce. Justin Stevens would get the next one as he use the old fashioned wraparound, 5-3. SB&W would get the next three, dashing the hopes of MNY, as Miron would bury a pass out front to complete the hat trick. Marc Belisle would blast one home after Krystle made a terrible pass attempt but turned out to be a perfect pass to Bells. Finally Thomson would just throw it on net and Kelly would bat it in as SB&W take this one 6-3.

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 1, SBW vs Just the Tip

Our next game saw SB&W taking on newcomer JTT. JTT had a quick start and kept up the pressure early on and they def gave us the shaft in this one. This was a prime example of a team with one line being way better than the other. Also having one player that carries the team. Alejandra Moreau-Ortiz opened the scorring by burying a cross-crease tap in. James Moreau would steal the ball. He would walk in all alone and make no mistake burying it, 2-0. Jerry McCarthy would extend the lead as he snapped one home from half, 3-0.

Moreau, who’s better than Dylan, would snap one low corner to extend the lead to 4-0. With a little over a minute remaining, Marc Belisle (sonne ma cloche) would bury one up top making it 4-1 as we were headed into the break. JTT held the lead and edge in shots, 20-11. The second half saw decidedly less goals, as only one was scored by Kortnie Legari, as she buried a cross-crease tap in. Krystle would send a shot, maybe a pass but like a really bad one, off of Alex’s ass that did not leave a mark. Photo evidence was given in group chat. “I’ve been hit harder during foreplay!” Timer would go on. Shots would be saved and this one would end with JTT taking their first Sunday league game, 5-1.

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 4, SBW vs Gars and Gals

Generally a post game is about the game itself. The score of this game was sadly one sided and not in the favour of SB&W but for Gars and Gals. That said before we get on to the real post game I will present some highlights of the game. Jen would make her debut with SB&W Ottawa Ball hockey team as a spare and would be a shot in the arm for them as they only had 4 girls for this game. Also a big kudos to Cindy as somehow she was able to come from Montreal after a high school reunion and managed to get through the entire Ottawa Ball hockey game without getting sick even she was as hung over as an actual high schooler after their first night of drinking. Despite the score it wasn’t as one sided as one might think. After going down 1-0 quickly in the first half SB&W would go on a power play that really looked like a power play. After some shaky special teams efforts in recent weeks SB&W not only managed to keep the play in the opposing side’s zone for essentially the entity of the man advantage but the opposing goalie was also peppered with shots. With Jake Miron leading the charge, save after save was made and many rebound opportunities were shut down but an out standing performance of their tendy leaving many shaking their heads wondering how we would be able to beat him. SB&W Ottawa Ball hockey team would find themselves down 4-0 at the half and it would be 7-0 before they managed to break the goose egg.

Second half

Jake had been pushing for a goal all game long and finally after tons of chances from him as well as solid play of Levy and emergency forward Claudia, Jake finally found the back of the net with some help from great speed and play making of Jen. With only a few minutes to go Alex would tell Jake “you might as well go cause I ain’t scoring,” (more on that in a bit) and would promptly net his second of the game. That would be the final score 7-2.

The real post game … at the bar.

Alex hoped in with Jake on the way to the bar and Jake would say “man, I’m really glad I got that goal, put the pressure on me when you said you weren’t gonna score.” Alex being fat, out of shape and not very good at ball hockey replied “it was just fact I didn’t mean to put added pressure on you.” Getting our usual spot at the bar SB&W bar team would have a new waitress (at least I hadn’t seen her before) and enjoyed great service and a pleasant nice person that softball players unfortunately don’t always get at their drinking hole. Beer was served and the usual nachos came out. Jake would say “is there cheese on these nachos?” which everyone remained silent for cause um well…. To his dismay of course there was as he proclaimed he was on a 7 day vegan purge and needed to have plant based food only. When it was discovered he had this epiphany after watching a documentary Alex went to the bar chat and informed Krystle, who wasn’t present for this game building a baby and all, that he had pulled a Dave. Krystle would promptly respond with a long list of possibilities of what that could mean. “He watched a documentary, you can figure out the rest,” was the response. There was the usual fantasy sports talk from Levy and even a speech from Coach Riel that was to be engraved in the minds of his pupils as the ball hockey team thanks all deities, aliens, dinosaurs and even some mammoths for blessing us with Jith which ended up making Riel a bud for life as well as our rep for our amazing jerseys!

Ottawa Ball Shenanigans

The usual shenanigans followed and Levy would point out that government workers have the next Monday off and even tho next weeks game starts at 8:20 proposed going to Riel’s after the game to raid his liquor cabinet. Cindy had been talking about her mixology skills all afternoon and was quickly nominated as bartender for the night. Riel would hype the idea up by saying he has ping pong table hockey darts and just about any other normal bar entertainment you could think of selling everyone who had remembrance day off so we could spend the day remembering that many people fought bravely for civil servants to have a day off to recover from a devastating hang over they would never be able to do normally after a late Sunday game. Eventually all would head home after another victory at the bar at least. Jake lent Alex his stick to use for the game and since one time last year he used Dylan’s he would complement Jake by saying “it’s not the biggest I’ve ever had, but it was the best.”

Later on in the night Krystle would message the chat relaying what Dave had said about the documentary Jake had watched. “Was it cause of the penis scene” Jake – “Yes it was!!!” leading all to question not only what was in this documentary but how did Dave know specifically what documentary it was about…. Jake would proclaim #GoVeganFuckBetter although side bar feels like they need more documented proof of concept.

Author’s note

As a former binge watcher of documentaries and audio teaching listener I’m slightly afraid of returning to that hobby now as evidence emerges that I may be inclined to not eat meat anymore or worse…. not drink beer…. There may or may not have been a night or two that I have had a nightmare about starting to watch documentaries again since this experience….

Ottawa Ball Hockey Post Game 8, SBW vs Soft Dump in the Corner

Our next game saw the Ottawa SB&W hockey team , playing their second of the night, taking on SDITC, who were getting to break in a new goalie to the league, welcome Danny. SB&W hockey team would open the scoring as Marc Belisle would wrist one five-hole. Kevin Maloney would even it up as he beat the keeper with a wrister from his own end; all this in the first two minutes. Well it didn’t hold up to the scoring showcase we all hoped it could be as the next goal came with about ninety seconds remaining as Heather would rip home a loose ball. That’s how it looked at half as SB&W were up 2-1, and holding the edge in the shot department 16-13. A few minutes in the hockey game, Amelie Charron would even this one up as she tapped in a rebound in front, 2-2. Spare, Lise Parisien would wrist one up top, in the slot, to give SDITC their first lead of the game. Kelly would jam home a loose ball to make this one a 3-3 contest. With a little over three minutes remaining, Kelly was at it again, as she tapped in a rebound in front, 4-3. With time winding down and shots flying everywhere, no more goals would come as the SB&W from Ottawa Hockey team take this one 4-3, in a very close match-up. Shout out to the ladies in this one as they accounted for 5 of the 7 goals scored in this one!
